Do I still need a Garmin inReach plan?: Yes. This service does not replace the need for an inReach plan from Garmin. This service only enhances the capabilities of the existing plan.
How does it work?: We allocate one of our phone numbers for your use. Whenever a text message is sent to that number, we forward it to your inReach device using the MapShare page. When the message arrives at your device, it looks like an email. If you respond to the message, the original sender will get the response, and it will look as though it came from your number.
How is this different from the phone number that Garmin assigns outgoing messages?: Unlike the number Garmin allocates, this number stays fixed for as long as you have a subscription with us. You can share the number to anyone you want without having to send them a message up front (which actually saves you money). You also get an email address that allows people to send email directly to your device.
Do I still pay per message according to my inReach plan?: Yes. You will still be paying the applicable fees to Garmin for messaging.
Are there any special requirements?: Yes. You must share your MapShare URL and password during the onboard process so that the service can be set up correctly. You will also need to receive a message to confirm everything works fine.
Where in the world does this work?: We support phone numbers in the USA (🇺🇸), Canada (🇨🇦), Mexico (🇲🇽), Australia (🇦🇺), New Zealand (🇳🇿) and Sweden (🇸🇪). Other countries on request. It all depends on the cost of allocating a fixed phone number. Willing to help us try other countries? Let us know.
